Highlights from the July TOASST box: From Yarra Valley to Rhône Valley

Perfect for the summer, the Soumah Savarro 2017 is this month’s gem from Yarra Valley, Australia. Made with 100% Savignin, an ancient grape varietal brought back to life by family-owned winery Soumah with origins dating back to 10th century Italy from the Bolzano region when it was called Savarro. This single vineyard white shows off delicate, floral, musk aromas with crisp bright acidity, zesty lime, lychee, lemon and orange blossoms, stone fruit, a lingering, mineral finish, high acidity with a touch of honey and fennel. Makes for an easy apertif or fun food pairing wine.

Beautifully versatile with food, pair with a fritto misto, scallop and white fish ceviche, rich shellfish dish such as a mahi mahi seafood stew or even a creamy chicken risotto. Or try with Cantonese-style steamed fish with black bean sauce, salt and pepper shrimp or fresh Vietnamese spring rolls.

Red lovers will crush on the Domaine de L'Ameillaud Cairanne 2016 from Rhône Valley, France. This husband-and-wife run domaine in the Vacluse region hails from Cairanne, a recently upgraded Grand Cru village now in the wine spotlight. A Côtes du Rhône blend that hits the high notes with mostly Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvédre sourced from 45-year-old vines planted in limestone and clay soils, we love the aromas of bright cherry, blackberry, subtle vanilla and oak with white pepper, savory, clove and leather notes with silky tannins on the palate and elegant mouthfeel.

Pairs nicely with regional cheeses including Beaufort, Abondance, and Reblochon while its soft tannins will complement lamb ribs with a spicy harissa barbecue sauce or braised veal shanks. Experiment with Asian cuisine including glazed char siu, crisp pork belly or even a chicken tikka masala.

Organic Wine of the Month Spotlight!
Seresin Tatou Pinot Noir, Marlborough, New Zealand 2014

This month's spotlight is on Seresin, a leading producer of small batch, premium organic and biodynamic wines in the region and also founded by namesake cinematographer of famed movies including Midnight Express and Harry Potter. Pale red in the glass with fragrant berries and dried fruit nose, earthy, mineral, herbaceous savory notes mixed with barnyard funk, oak and soft light tannins.

This lighter-styled Pinot Noir pairs with semi-soft cheeses such as Gruyère or Comté, a lean pork tenderloin, pan-seared ahi tuna steak salad or experiment with a pork larb lettuce wrap or Thai basil chicken.
