From Margaret River to Burgundy: Celebrating International White Wine Day

Happy International White Wine Day from the team at TOASST! This year it happens to fall today on August 4th but we think that there’s always an occasion to celebrate white wines from around the world, especially during the summer! See below for a journey around the world through white wine highlights from our August TOASST box along with food pairing tips to make the most out of your wines.

White Wine Highlights from the TOASST August box:

Named after the flame trees that surround the Margaret River winery owned by the Towner family, the Flametree SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay 2015 is the winery’s top Chardonnay using the same clone for an old world Chardonnay from Mendoza. With bright citrus and tropical fruit aromas, mouthwatering acidity, white pepper, flint, well integrated oak notes and a textured, saline finish we appreciate the balance of fruit purity with a rounder mouthfeel and kick of lime zest on the back of the palate.

Beautifully versatile summer food wine with just the right balance of acidity and roundness that pairs wonderfully with mature cheeses such as an aged Comté or Gruyère, picnic favorites including chicken pasta salad, caramelized grilled pork chops, fried buttermilk chicken, or lobster mac and cheese.

Originating from Bailly, a small village famous for its quarries and the stones that built Notre Dame and the birthplace of the AOC Crémant de Bourgogne the Bailly Lapierre Crémant de Bourgogne Pinot Noir is made with hand-picked black Pinot Noir grapes in the traditional Champagne method. Subtle bouquet of pear, apple and jasmine, mineral, citrus and brioche with a satisfyingly long fizzy finish.

Pair with creamy cheeses including a triple-cream Brie, Camembert or chèvre, shellfish dishes including a crab, lemon and chili spaghetti, garlic and lemon mussels, cioppino seafood stew or Asian favorites including lemongrass prawn laksa noodles or the crispy Vietnamese pancake Banh Xeo.

This standout example of Albariño from Northwest Spain is made from small plots of vines from the O Rosal subzone overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Deusa Nai Albariño 2019 gives off expressive aromas of lemon, mineral and tropical notes of green apple, grapefruit and lemon with tart and tangy high acidity as a refreshing option for the summer.

Lovely on its own as an aperitif, pair with light seafood or meats including shrimp ceviche with garlic and lime, risotto ai fruitti di mare, halibut fish tacos, fried oysters, garlic and lemon steamed clams, Thai crispy fish with lime and garlic or salted egg prawns for an Asian mix.

Red Wine of the Month Spotlight!
Stellenrust Cornerstone Pinotage, Stellenbosch, South Africa 2017

Honoring Pinotage as the cornerstone of the South African wine industry, this luscious, well-structured example of the region's most famous grape varietal is a treat from family-owned South African wine gem Stellenrust. Grapes are harvested from 50-year old bush vines from the Bottelary property. Flavors of black cherry, plums, dark chocolate, coffee, pepper, smoke, herbaceous, oak and vanilla tones with well-integrated elegant tannins and silky finish.

Soft tannins combined with lifting acidity and subtle sweet finish from the fruit makes this wine a winner with saucy pastas like the Summer Puttanesca recipe below or spicier foods. Pair with Thai green curries, black pepper beef with green peppers, spicy Sichuan eggplant with minced pork and garlic sauce or Korean beef bulgogi.
